Farewell 2009

I am looking forward to a new and shiny year! I am determined to make it a glass-half-full outlook type of year.... even if it kills me!

Hope everyone has a wonderful night!

I am a huge fan of old pinup paintings. Gil Elvren (points up) is of course one the better known, along with Alberto Vargas, Edward Hopper, and so many others. Well, check out Jim Stigall's. He previously had done some wonderful sketches of me when I posed for Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School. We're meeting up again after the new year, and he's going to do a painting of me in this style. I am simply tickled about it.

I popped in my Ziegfield Follies dvd today while I am working. I get so inspired by the pretty glamour!

These are nursing shoes from Nursemate. Don't they have the cutest vintage feel? I figured that I could wear them when I'm not in scrubs too, and they would match my vintage dresses and outfits for class, comfy cute.

I will have to make a post of the fun things that I got from Santa. Sam (Santa) also indulged me in a vintage Swirl dress and really adorable vintage black velvet hat. I have to take pictures of those!

He also got me Burlesque: A Living History, which when I opened had a photo of Orchid Mei on the back. (She's also in the book.) I had to laugh and tell her that Sam got me her for Christmas.

He also got me a book called Retro Crafts
that has some really fun projects that I cannot wait to try.

I also received more volumes of the Twilight Zone Radio Dramas! Love!

We watched "White Christmas" and Sam actually enjoyed it, haha. I told him that I just loved the clothes and makeup and hair and music and dancing. He was sweet enough to tell me that most of my clothes are starting to look like that. Oh if only! I think eventually my wardrobe will be nothing but vintage or vintage reproduction.

Really, it was a wonderful Christmas.

I am getting a luggage cart to pull my bookbags around. Yes, we have that many books a day to lug around, especially after buying the ones for the new classes too. They love to reference previous books and extra books during class, so we have to have them all, all the time. =\

And I received my black pencil skirt from Pinupgirl Clothing. It fits great, is made in the U.S.A., and I figured it would be stable that would get lots of wear. I do have to say that their clothing and clothing from Daddy O's is made very well and lasts and lasts! Of course they both carry clothing that are brands that I love!

Now, I am looking forward to a fabulous New Year!!

Aerial Again?

I'm thinking about taking aerial dance again. A few years ago, I did the introductory course, and I was horrible at it. Then, life gave me a few extras and it went by the wayside.

They have basics classes on Fridays at noon. I'm thinking of jumping back in. It may be a great way to decompress after a killer week of classes. My classes end at 9:30am on Fridays. I know one of the instructors very well too. Maybe I should give it another go. Plus, it's just freaking pretty!

I love browsing Etsy. There are so many fun things there. There is no surprise that I am quite a nerd, and I often search "lungs", "respiratory", "cardiopulmonary" and stuff like that. I did break down and buy this tee, made by a lady in Sweden. I plan to wear it our first day back to class.

(I hope the pics show up)

I also found these cute handmade necklaces too. Though, I think that I may try my hand at making my own pendant.

Of course, you don't have to look up anatomical stuff, haha. I love the vintage prints that are used though even on soaps!

In preparation

I have decided to try and go through with it, not buy any new clothes next year. This will be exempt from school scrubs (we haven't done that yet) and under thingies. So, I was mending torn seams and holes today in some pieces of clothing. Preparing myself, you see, for what will come in the next year. I also pulled out a skirt that I have not worn in a year. I have to play with new ways to wear these things in my closet. It should be an interesting experiment. I know that I own more than enough clothes that I should not want for things to wear. I'll try to remember to snap pictures of my outfits too. At school, it won't be too hard. There is a full length mirror in our health occupations restroom. I just never use that one because there is only 1 potty, so I trapse all the way around the building to a bathroom with more stalls and no line.

On a side note, I've been trying to use up stuff in my fridge before it wilts in order to not be so wasteful. Yesterday, I sliced up a peach, seared it and put it on top of baby spinach, some shaved aged parmesean and aged white cheddar and all wrapped up in a multi-grain (no sugar) tortilla. May I just say YUM! It's a mad lab kitchen. I am trying to re-invent leftovers too everyday, waste not ya know.

So, just a teeny update.

I had finally finished paying this off, and it is now mine! YaaY! Plus, I was bestowed with extra goodies within my package as well!
Thank you Kambriel!!

Just Fun

I thought it would be fun to do some outfit posts. This was from Wednesday before I left for class. (Yep, that's a Nightmare Before Christmas comforter on our bed, and our bedroom is rusty/orange and dark black/browns). I was feeling somewhat 20s/30s. And I had to stand on my little step stool that I use to get to the shelves in our closet because we don't have a full length mirror.

After class, I ran into Target to get dryer sheets and picked up a $1 2010 planner for school. Then, I was like "Oh full length mirror!" and shot this one, but I had on my coat.

Maybe I'll do something similar to what Two Smart Girls is planning on doing next year and add my outfits. Well, until clinicals begin because then, it's just scrubs! But let's see how I can jazz those babies up, haha

Negative Nelly

I am a negative Nelly. I always expect the worst of any situation before it has even begun. It is horrible. There is a constant flow of negative self-talk in my head. I recognize this. Really, I do.
Yet, for some reason, it is so difficult to change it. The record playing has been there my whole life. It is like a bad habit or addiction even. Then, I worry about things that have not even occurred, making myself create all of these weird imaginings of what will or could go wrong. Then, I get angry over things that have not happened and probably will not. Then, my anxiety just goes *kaboom* and...

... I constantly feel like this ~points up~ Bad. I am really trying to take matters into my hands and create the change. I know many things that I make up in my head are projecting negative on nonexistent reality. There are many things that are beyond my control, and I really, really do not like that. So I am taking advice from a friend (who is a shrink). I am trying some different cognitive behavioral activities to make the string of negativity in my head slow down and hopefully cease. She also recommended some breathing exercises, and learning some meditation techniques.

Also, I really need to get some time management integrated into my life. After this week, I have two weeks until the absolute madness/overload of a new quarter begins. (Still having some doubts about that one aspect of the job.) Maybe I can try to get the seeds started so that I can become one of those laid back persons. I want things to just roll off my back and give my clenched jaw and "racing" heart a break!

Food Fun!

After reading this post on Bitchcakes blog, I went out in search for the elusive Field Roast Apple-Sage Sausage (vegan). I found it yesterday at the Natural Grocer up the street from my house. I swear her finished dish looks so good that I cannot wait to try it. It will be a day or so though before I get to it because we still have some left overs in the fridge.

I had made a big batch of red beans and rice, minus the sausage. I did make man one link of hot on the side. The rest though is a big veggie batch of yum! Plus, I love that I can freeze portions for use later in the week.

Last night, Sam had a friend over so I made them chicken and cheese enchiladas. For myself I used the same recipe but used the Morning Star Farms Mealstarters Chick'n Strips. I have to say, the veggie version came out just as good! The dishes were really pretty too when I brought them out of the oven. I wish that I would have snapped a pic! I really have to remember those things! I would like to make this again and substitute mushrooms and spinach for the chick'n strips. I know Hubbin would love them that way!

Oh yummy food goodness!

Planning that New Year's List??

I normally do not make New Year's Resolutions, but for some odd reason I feel compelled to do so. I would be very interested to hear if anyone out there is planning any changes and what they may be.

I just think that I may challenge myself to not buying any new clothing next year, like the previous post that I made. I really think that I can do it.

I am going to try and switch back to a vegetarian diet once again, although, I'll still be cooking meat for the man. He does like some of the veggie dishes that I make so perhaps I will be able to sway him to eat a few more along with me.

I definitely want to get our back yard in order and have a better planned veggie garden come spring. I do believe that we will be following the old square foot gardening method (my mom & dad sent me an old copy of the book) rather than my hodgepodge plant anywhere strategy. Our compost unit is just doing so great that we finally should be able to incorporate more in our beds too. My future vision is mini-farm, veggie & fruit in small compact area. =) If only it were easier to get permits for a few chickens in this area, I would love eggs! Plus, I grew up with chickens and miss the little buggers.

I would like to be able to sew, crochet, embroider, cross-stitch, perhaps finally learn to knit, well heck, I just want to have more time to craft.

I definitely will be using my bicycle more this year in hopes of building up longer rides.

Oh, and along with diet, there will be a new exercise regimen. The doc and I went over the pluses of a new diet and exercise strategy along with relaxation techniques.

So what are you planning? I love ideas and sharing.

On a side note: not sure if I am going to continue on with school, rather this program. I am taking the break to contemplate. Along with unplugging ventilators and life support there are a few other aspects of the job that I am not so sure about. Plus, the job and RT's here are quite different than the ones that I encountered during my six month stint at the children's hospital back home, which by the way, I adored and was the whole reason that I wanted to become a respiratory therapist. The whole outlook is like another world in a way. I am making good grades (all A's & B's) and love the academia portion, I am just having some issues with some of the duties and the way they are approached. I am fine with death in general, just not with it being at my own hand to others. I also am a very empathetic person and do not want to become as cold and disassociated as many of these folks here have become. It is quite amazing to me. Hmmm, so I am debating which road to take in this crossroads. Til break a whole week of exams, medical director's lecture on disease, and a history paper to finish.

Crazy Ideas for next year

I am amazed by how much "stuff" I have, including clothes. I am contemplating trying to not buy any new clothing next year. I could make new things because gosh knows that I have enough material. I could refurbish some of the items that I have. Hmmm, something to think about.

This would of course exclude undergarments because, well, sometimes a girl just needs new undergarments and I cannot make underwire bras or a sturdy bra, in general.

There will also be a regimented exercise routine. Plus, after my doctor's appointment Monday, EKG's, still waiting on blood results, my diet and lifestyle need a complete overhaul. It doesn't hurt one either to make those positive changes. The food has begun immediately.

So, just thinking about things that may be achievable in the upcoming year. Perhaps, once I'm done hashing out ideas, I'll post a list of things I plan to do or change in the upcoming year. Feel free to share yours too!

P.s. I am starting to have all sorts of issues with turning off ventilators and life support, a common part of the job of a respiratory therapist. We're discussing more and more in classes and watching films and talking about the legal, moral and ethical issues. Makes one think and question if they are cut out for it. I thought that I was, but am now not so sure.

Books own me...

I have not been on the computer almost the whole week, with the exception of sending a paper to a teacher. It seems like I am either in class or at the school library. I come home to shower and put a little comfort food in my mouth before passing out, and the cycle begins again. Today, after classes, I came home and actually took a 2 hour nap.

I have finally gotten to read/catch up on blogs!!

Oh my! Crazy I tell you! My weekend will be spent studying and writing papers. ~sigh~ I will be going tomorrow night though to the last roller derby bout of the season AND riding the party bus!! Woohoo!!

On a cool note, we are arranging a group of us to take a private cadaver lab. Twelve of us, $40 a person, 4 hour lab and they will focus on the cardiopulmonary system. Yes, I am a complete, morbid, geek-oid.

Two more weeks til this quarter is over! Yipee!!!

Friday Funday

We went bowling! Of course, we forgot to take pictures until after we had returned the bowling shoes!! Hence, there is me in Mary Janes faking pictures. The workers were nice enough to oblige us in allowing me there without the bowling shoes.

I really needed bumper guards, haha! We went afterwards and had fabulous Greek food at a family owned restaurant. It's a fabulous little place between the bowling alley and our house.

Ending the meal with shots of ouzo! Pinky out, hahaha!

Black Friday=Bowling & some new reads

We do not brave the madness of Black Friday. I find it the total opposite of goodwill to men which is supposed to be the whole part of the Christmas season. So, instead, we shall meet a few friends up the street and bowl! This is becoming a new passion! Who knows, maybe eventually we'll begin our own league, for fun of course.

I'm always a little late in finding things. I stumbled upon the RetroSpective mag site when searching for vintage housewife articles. This article on the Modern Retro Housewife is great!

If anyone would like to point me to blogs, websites and such feel free. I always enjoy fun reads!

Let's Bowl, let's bowl, let's rock n roll!

The husband and I are always saying that we should start bowling, form a league even. We talked about it this morning as I dropped him off for work. Then we heard someone on the radio talk about how they go bowl on Thursday nights. We were like, "We should do it."

My grandmother used to go bowling when she was alive. I remember her getting her bowling ball case, shoes and having on her league shirt to go meet the girls one night a week. The image is ingrained. I used to love to go with friends as a kid, then teen.

Just got a call from hubby. He asked if I wanted to go bowling Friday night. Well, heck yes I do! One of the folks from his work is up for it too. I would love to start a weekly or even bi-weekly fun night of bowling. It would be even cooler if we actually could get enough folks to commit to start a league. Oh the names we could come up with for our shirts!!

Now, I have to head off to classes.

Madame Fortuna!

This was my horoscope for today. Ain't it the truth?

Your mind is ranging far and wide as you try to figure out what's really going on. You may need to get intensely philosophical about one issue in particular, and your brain is up to the job!

I'm glad to know that my brain is up for the job! I feel as though I have stretched it past its limits lately. =)

School is a bit insane right now, of course doesn't everywhere get crazy before a holiday. Everyone trying to cram in as much work and information as they can before a few days off. Yep, that is the way it is currently, pulling us all different directions. I will be so happy to have two days off next week. Though I am sure that I will still be studying, a little pressure will be lifted! YaaY!

This is becoming the husband's weekend specialty, blueberry pancakes and maple bacon. He cooked and cleaned this morning so that I could study. Sweetness.

Executive Decision

Yeah, I'm going to drink myself silly tonight. Maybe, til I pass out. Some sleep of some form or another is better than nothing. Especially after almost breaking down in tears in Cardio A&P today for no reason than delirium.... I have a long day tomorrow with a pathiophysiology exam on 6 different cardio/pulmonary diseases with case studies and I have to perform vitals and phys exams. With one more night of no sleep that would be a big Booooooooo

No, I probably won't drink until I pass out, but I'm tempted. For instance yesterday (after being up since 2am, I did not even get home until 8pm, then wrote a paper to submit by midnight at 10:30pm). I do think, however, that I will have a few glasses of wine. Maybe a relaxant? Mon Dieu

Oh so tired

All my life, I have not been a very good sleeper. I always wake up before or at the crack of dawn. The past few years, well, my sleeping habits have become worse. As soon as my head hits the pillow around 10:30pm-11:00pm, I crash, asleep. Then, dum dum dum, 2:00am rolls around. Pop! I sit up, and that's it. I am awake. I roam around, try to just lie there and listen to audio books, or my recorded lectures. Surely, those should put me to sleep. Alas, there is no sleep until.... about 15 minutes before my alarm goes off at 5:45. Then, I become sleepy again. Poop.

No amount of valerian root, herbal tea, TylenolPm or AdvilPM, do anything. Drats.

Oh well. I have found myself under constant anxiety. Even when I am supposed to have a day to relax, I cannot. I feel the constant pressure to be studying, working, cleaning, cooking, studying.

Oh Morpheus, grant me one night of unbroken and maybe just six hours of sleep?

Saturday, 7 November 2009

Right now, there is a quiche baking away in my oven. I made it for our breakfast/brunch. I was debating making some beignets, but decided this would be easier. I am thinking, though, that tomorrow will be beignets and coffee. =)

We had two folks that S works with over for dinner last night. I made my late grandmaw's recipe of creole rice with pork and andouille, my spinach salad with feta, toasted walnuts and dressing, corn and some french bread. Oh, I almost forgot! I made a rum cake with a sugar rum glaze. I was an awful hostess though. After we ate, I washed dishes and crashed out cold. Our company was still downstairs. I think being up since 3:00am and not sitting down the whole evening except to eat wore me out.

Speaking of getting to sit down. S & I found two great old recliners at the Goodwill. One a brown (p)leather one that I am guessing is from the 70's with its button tucks and other details and color that makes me think that is its decade. The other a wooden and light blue cushioned Lazy-Boy from the early 80s me think. It's a maw and paw set for us. I did not even get to enjoy my new acquisition last night. Boo. They cleaned up really nice and are super comfy and were a quarter of the price of all that we found at the "vintage" furniture shops down on Broadway. =) I don't know, maybe they are both 80s? We're still in the process of painting and rearranging stuff.

Cocktail hour?

We are planning on items to keep our eye out for when we next go thrifting. We have ideas for our living room. We would like to find some fun retro cush-y chairs for one. We are still kicking ourselves for not buying one we saw a few weeks back. It was gone when we next went to our favorite haunts.

I did some pic browsing for fun ideas of a rolling bar cart. These would be so much more fun than the way we have all of our liquors spread around now.

These are diverse and fun!

This one somewhat reminds me of an island in my late grandmother's house.

I love the circles on this one.

I love this one because of the green and chrome.

This one is so cute! Deco and elegant!

Itch to Stitch

I have the envie' to sew, big time. I have not made anything in a very long while. Alas, there is no time. Boooo ~pout~

We have been working around the house. Sam has been hanging our newly framed New Orleans prints that have been rolled away for years. He also bought me some new Halloween dishes. I have been meaning to reorganize my kitchen cabinets and pantry anyway, and now I have an excuse as I need more room! Plus, there is just general reorganizing as we keep changing things up and redecorating around here. We would like to hit some vintage stores for some arm chairs. We also need to refinish our free antique table and chairs.

Well, I'm off to classes.... and this, my friends, is why I have no time for fun reading or sewing.

A funny thing happened on the train last night. The train security guard asked, "Are you supposed to be Betty Boop?"
The funny thing, I wasn't wearing a costume, haha.

Hope the Great Pumpkin day!!

Cover your feet

I would love to find something like this. Rain boots that cover your shoes, heels! Cute and versatile! I found this pair on flicker. I am kicking myself because there was a pair of red ones on ebay for $10 and I should have nabbed them. Well, actually I tried but the seconds were ticking and I couldn't get myself logged in fast enough. Congrats other bidder! Maybe I'll find another pair for the snowy days.

Dark Glamour

Isn't this makeup gorgeous? It reminds me of 20s vamp, with a French flair. I think, though, that I would do a red lip with it. Maybe this will be a style that I'll play with. Too bad that I look absolutely horrid with bangs, haha

Halloween Fun

In honor of this Halloween week, I thought I would post some fun. I actually own these shoes. S got them for my birthday this past year in May. They are kitcsh-y love!

My roots are in Goth. I love beauty, especially dark. I found this photo from C12. It's a dress that Kambriel finished for the passed Laura Purdy. I was lucky enough to be the model, and in the fashion show for C12 in New Orleans.

Here is another one of her haunting designs. Yes, I am a little obsessed with her clothing. =)
